Apple iPhones come in two flavours – locked and unlocked – and it’s important to be able to check which sort you’ve got. An unlocked phone can be used on any phone network, while a locked phone can only be used on the network the phone is locked to.
The iPhones you pay full price for (typically from the Apple Store) are unlocked by default. But an iPhone bought from a network, usually as part of an on-going network plan, will be locked. This is normally for a set period, 18 or 24 months, and the cost of your contract covers part of the cost of the iPhone device.
It’s not possible to tell, just by looking at the handset, for instance whether an iPhone 6 plus is locked or unlocked: Apple does not allow other phone companies to brand iPhone devices. To confuse matters even further, some phones are locked when sold, but are unlocked at a later date when the original owner has paid for the initial contract.
But don’t worry. It’s relatively easy to find out if your iPhone 6 plus is unlocked or locked, using either the Settings app or a SIM card.
Checking if it is unlocked by using other sim cards
It’s best to have two SIM cards, from different networks. One is usually the SIM card you own, and then other will be the one in the iPhone. Follow these steps to check that the iPhone is unlocked:
- Make a phone call using the current SIM card. Make sure it connects.
- Power off the iPhone. Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and use the Slide to Power Off option to switch off the iPhone.
- Use the SIM-card ejector tool to eject the SIM card from the iPhone.
- Insert your new SIM card.
- Press the Sleep/Wake button to wake up the iPhone.
- Make a phone call. Check that the iPhone can connect a call using the new SIM card.
- The call gets connected.
Concluding the fact that unlocking helps use other sim cards in my iPhone 6 plus. Just in case this one needs to confirm about their iPhone 6 plus being unlocked, a separate method can be used that is by using unlock codes for apple 6 plus.
The internet is full of websites that sell unlock codes. Depending on the country you are in, the manufacturer of the phone, and the carrier you use, you should expect to pay up to $30. Don’t spend any more than that if the seller asks, because you will find it cheaper elsewhere. You can get some codes for as low as $10.
After you submit the request to your carrier, it might take a few days to complete. Contact your carrier for the status of your unlock request. Once your iPhone has been unlocked, you will receive a confirmation from the carrier. Now follow these steps:
- Power down your iPhone
- Remove your SIM card and insert the new SIM card.
- Complete the setup process.
